The switch is bouncing, not you
A double-click fault is the most common way a “good” mouse dies. The micro-switch inside the left button oxidizes or the leaf spring fatigues, and a single intended click becomes two pointer-down events a few milliseconds apart. In a desktop this opens two copies of a file. In a game it fires twice, drops a block, or eats a UI button. People search “double click test” because they are already angry at the hardware and want a number, not a forum thread.
This page records every click on a large pad, stores the interval from the previous click in milliseconds, and flags any interval under 80 milliseconds as a probable fault. Human double-clicks on purpose (the desktop gesture) usually sit in the 100–400 ms band, which is why operating systems default the double-click speed around 500 ms. How to take the test so the verdict is fair
Click slowly. If you hammer the pad like a CPS test you will produce some sub-80 ms intervals on a healthy mouse, especially with jitter clicking. The diagnostic intent is ordinary clicks: open a file, select a unit, press a button. Ten to twenty calm clicks is enough. If three or more of them land under 80 ms without you meaning to double-click, the switch is the suspect. Try another mouse on the same pad before you throw the first one away — a 240 Hz display and a high-polling receiver can make honest clicks look closer together than they are, but they will not cluster at 15 ms.

How to improve your score
- Click slowly on purpose. This is not a CPS test. Pause between clicks. If faults still appear, it is the switch.
- Retest on another port. A dying USB receiver can duplicate events. Wired, another port, then another mouse.
- Clean before you replace. A can of air around the left button fixes some bounce. If the verdict stays dirty, the switch wants a solder job or a new mouse.
- Check the OS double-click speed. Windows and macOS let you slow the double-click gesture. That does not fix a 20 ms bounce, but it stops the desktop from opening files twice on a borderline switch.
