What this test measures
Simple visual reaction time is the gap between a stimulus appearing and your first response. In this test the stimulus is a full-panel color change from red to green. There is no choice to make and no target to aim at — only wait, then act. That isolation is the point. Choice reaction time, go/no-go tasks, and sport-specific drills all add extra stages (recognize, decide, aim). Those stages are real, but they are not this number. If you want a clean read of how fast the loop from eye to click is today, this is the instrument.
The protocol is the same one used in classic lab simple-RT work, stripped for the browser. You complete five valid trials. Each trial waits a random 1.5–5 seconds so you cannot ride a rhythm. Click while the panel is still red and the trial is discarded as a false start — “Too soon!” — then you redo that attempt. The score is the mean of the five valid times, in milliseconds. We do not drop the slowest trial, we do not let you keep rolling until you like the number, and we do not round in a way that flatters you. The average you see is the average you ran.

How to improve your score
- Sleep and recent caffeine, not hacks. Simple RT is one of the first things to slip after a short night. A normal night of sleep will move this number more than any “focus playlist.” Moderate caffeine can shave a few milliseconds; a crash or jitter usually adds them back as false starts.
- Sit close, full screen, wired if you can. Display latency is real. A 60 Hz panel plus a wireless mouse can add 20–40 ms that has nothing to do with you. Use a high-refresh screen if you have one, a wired mouse, and the full-screen play state this site already drops you into.
- Watch the panel, not a countdown. There is no countdown. If you try to predict the green, you will false-start. Rest your gaze on the center of the panel and respond to the color change, not to a rhythm you invented.
- Keep the finger loaded, not tense. Hover the finger or the thumb so the first movement is a press, not a reach. Over-gripping the mouse adds noise. A light, preloaded contact is faster and more consistent across the five trials.
- Train the thing you actually need. If you care about driving, esports, or sport, pair this test with the Aim Trainer and the Click Speed Test. Simple RT is the floor. Decision and accuracy sit on top of it, and they need their own practice.
FAQ
What is a good reaction time?
For a simple visual click test, most healthy adults land between 220 and 280 milliseconds. Under 200 ms is genuinely fast. Under 180 ms is rare without a high-refresh display and a lot of practice. Context matters: auditory reaction time is typically faster than visual, and in-game “reaction” includes aiming and decision, so it will never match this number.
Is 300ms slow?
300 ms is slower than the young-adult average, but it is not pathological on its own. It is a normal result for many people over 50, for anyone who is tired, or for a test taken on a laggy laptop trackpad. Re-run it on a decent mouse after sleep before you worry. Consistently slower than 350–400 ms is worth a conversation with a clinician if it is new for you.
Why did I get “Too soon”?
You clicked while the panel was still red. The wait is random between 1.5 and 5 seconds so you cannot time it. Anticipation is a different skill from reaction. That trial is thrown out and you retry it so the average is not polluted by a lucky guess.
Can I get 100 ms on this test?
Almost certainly not as a true visual simple RT. Human photoreceptors, nerve conduction, and a muscle press have a floor. Sub-150 ms scores on a web test usually mean a false start, a bug, or a device reporting odd timestamps. Treat anything under 160 ms with suspicion.
Does screen refresh rate change my score?
Yes. A 60 Hz display updates every ~16.7 ms, so the green can be late relative to the game clock. 120 Hz and 240 Hz panels reduce that quantization. The percentile still compares you to other people taking a browser test, most of them on 60 Hz, so you are not being cheated — but if you are chasing a personal best, refresh rate is one of the real levers.
How is the percentile calculated?
We map your average onto a distribution centered around 248 ms with a spread that matches published simple-RT samples and large online datasets. Lower is better. The bar is capped at 1–99% so nobody is told they are literally the fastest or slowest human.
