How WPM is counted here

Words per minute is not “words you finished.” The standard formula treats five characters as one word, including spaces. We count only correct characters toward WPM, so a sloppy burst does not get credit. Raw WPM counts every character you typed, correct or not. Accuracy is correct characters divided by characters typed. The three numbers together tell you whether you are slow, fast-and-clean, or fast-and-messy.

The passage is a stream of high-frequency English words, not a quote from a novel and not a keyboard-smash of random letters. Quotes reward memorization; random letters punish word-shape reading. Common words sit in the middle, which is what you actually type in a browser, a chat, and a document. 15 seconds is a sprint. 30 seconds is the default. 60 seconds is the professional standard. The 1-minute and 5-minute pages exist for people who specifically want stamina scores.

How to improve your score

  • Look at the screen, not the keyboard. If you still glance down, you are paying a 200 ms tax on every other word. Cover the keys for a week of short sessions. Speed comes after you stop looking, not before.
  • Accuracy first, then add speed. Raw WPM without accuracy is noise. Stay at a pace that holds 96%+ and the net WPM will climb on its own. Sprinting at 80% accuracy is how people plateau.
  • Fix the keys you always miss. Most people have two or three letters that generate half their errors — often n/m, i/o, or a left-hand vowel. Spend five minutes on those pairs instead of another full test.
  • Sit so the elbows are near 90 degrees. A laptop on a couch destroys both speed and wrists. Keyboard at elbow height, wrists straight, light keypresses. Mechanical vs membrane matters less than posture.
  • Use the 60-second and 5-minute modes as truth. A 15-second burst can be 10 WPM above your real rate. If you care about the number you would type in a document, trust the longer tests.

FAQ

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 WPM is average for adults who type regularly. 60 WPM is a professional bar for most office work. 80+ is fast. 100+ is expert. Accuracy should stay above 95% or the WPM is not usable work.

What is the difference between WPM and raw WPM?

WPM (net) only counts correct characters. Raw WPM counts everything you typed. If raw is 90 and net is 70, you are fast and messy. Employers and this site both care about net.

Does backspace hurt my score?

Backspace is allowed. Deleted characters are not in the final typed string, so a correction can save accuracy and net WPM. It costs time, which is the real penalty. On a 15-second test that time is expensive; on a 5-minute test it is usually worth it.

Can I take this on a phone?

Yes. Tap the stage to open the keyboard. Phone WPM is a different skill from a physical keyboard — thumbs, autocorrect off, small keys. Your phone personal best is stored separately from nothing; it is still “your” number, just not comparable to a desktop run.

Why common words instead of quotes?

Quotes let you predict. Random characters never let you use word shape. Common English is the distribution you actually type. It also matches what people search when they look up a typing test.
