What sequence memory is testing

This is a visuospatial span task. Tiles on a 3×3 grid light up one after another. You wait until the sequence finishes, then tap the same tiles in the same order. Each clean round adds one step. The first mistake ends the run. The score is the length of the longest sequence you reproduced, not the round you died on.

It is related to, but not the same as, digit span. Digit span is verbal and auditory. Sequence memory is spatial and silent. People who can hold eight digits sometimes fall apart at six tiles, and the reverse is also true. We keep the grid at 3×3 on purpose: growing the board would mix in visual search. Here the difficulty is only the length of the chain.

How to improve your score

  • Chunk into groups of three. The mind holds chunks, not items. Encode the sequence as short phrases of tiles — “top row left-right, then center” — instead of nine isolated flashes.
  • Do not hover your finger during the show. Chasing the lights with a finger looks like it helps and usually steals attention from encoding. Watch, then move.
  • Use a quiet room for personal bests. Working memory is allergic to conversation and notifications. One message popup will cost you two levels.
  • Name the tiles if you are verbal. A silent “1-5-9-3” mapped onto positions uses a second code. Dual coding (spatial plus verbal) is the most reliable amateur strategy.
  • Stop after a miss, reset, go again. Tilt after a stupid miss is how a 12 becomes a 6. The Try again button is the whole training plan.

FAQ

What is a good sequence memory score?

Landing in the 7–9 range is average. 10–12 is clearly above average. 15 is rare without a chunking system. Compare only to this 3×3 protocol; a 4×4 grid is a different test.

Is this the same as the Simon game?

Same family: growing visuospatial sequences. Simon uses four colored pads and usually plays a sound. This test is silent, nine tiles, and ends on the first error instead of tracking a life bar.

Can the same tile flash twice in a row?

Yes. Repeats are allowed. If you assume they are not, you will throw a run the first time a tile doubles.

Does this train intelligence?

It trains this task. Gains transfer poorly to unrelated memory work. Treat it as a game with a useful percentile, not a brain-training program.

Why did the run end on a tile I was sure was right?

The sequence is strict about order, not just the set of tiles. A correct tile in the wrong position is a miss. Watch once without tapping if you are rushing the input phase.
