What visual memory means here
This is a spatial pattern-reproduction task. Several cells in a grid flash white at the same time. They go dark. You click the same cells, in any order. A wrong cell costs a life and the level is replayed. Three lives, then the run is over. Each new level adds a cell to remember and, when needed, grows the grid so the pattern cannot be solved by guessing a huge fraction of the board.
Unlike sequence memory, order does not matter. Unlike the chimp test, the cells are not numbered. You are holding a set of locations. That is closer to remembering a constellation than a phone number, and it loads visuospatial working memory plus a bit of inhibition (do not click a neighbor that “looks right”).

How to improve your score
- Build a shape, not a list of cells. A diagonal, an L, a cluster in one corner — shapes survive the blank better than “third from left on row two.”
- Sweep systematically when you click. Once the pattern is encoded, click it in a fixed order (left to right, top to bottom) so you do not lose your place and tap a neighbor.
- Do not guess the last square. A 50/50 guess with two lives left is how runs die. If the last cell is not there, wait a beat and reconstruct the shape.
- Sit back a little. Too close and the grid exceeds the fovea. A bit of distance lets you see the whole pattern as one object, which is the whole trick.
- Use the lives as retries, not as panic. A lost life replays the same level. Slow down. The pattern is the same one you just missed, which is a gift if you stay calm.
FAQ
What is a good visual memory score?
Clearing around level 8–10 is average. 12+ is good. 16+ is rare. Because grids grow, later levels are not the same task as early ones, so the level number already includes that curve.
Does order matter?
No. Click the flashed squares in any order. Clicking a square that did not flash costs a life.
Why does the grid get bigger?
If we only added squares on a 3×3, late levels would be “click almost everything.” Growing the grid keeps the density in a range where memory, not probability, is the limiter.
Is this the same as the chimp test?
No. The chimp test is ordered numbers that hide after the first click. Visual memory is an unordered set of locations. They correlate, but people often have a favorite.
Can I play with a keyboard?
The grid is click/tap for a reason: mapping 36 cells onto keys is worse UX than it is accessibility. If you need a keyboard-first memory test, use Number Memory or Sequence Memory.
