Digit span, without the lab coat
Miller’s famous “seven plus or minus two” was about the capacity of immediate memory for lists. Digit span is the cleanest version of that idea: see a number, hold it, type it back. This test starts at one digit and adds one digit every time you are right. The display time scales with length so you can actually read the number — this is not a flash-reading contest. Fail, and the score is the last length you got right.
Forward digit span (this test) is easier than backward span, and visual presentation is a little different from spoken digits. If you subvocalize — “four two nine eight” — you are using the phonological loop, which is exactly what most people do. If you visualize the shape of the number, you are using a different buffer. Both count. Neither is cheating.

How to improve your score
- Chunk in threes, like a phone number. 849271 is impossible as six items and easy as 849-271. Almost every high score on this test is chunking, not a larger raw buffer.
- Say the chunks out loud (or in your head) in rhythm. A steady rhythm is extra structure. “Eight-four-nine, two-seven-one” survives a longer blank than a panicked dump of digits.
- Do not start typing until the number is gone. You cannot type during the show phase anyway. Use that time only to encode. The input box is for recall, not for catching up.
- Watch for leading zeros. Zeros are digits. 04719 is five digits, and if you drop the zero the round is wrong. Treat every character as load-bearing.
- Stop converting to a “nice” number. Rounding, approximating, or remembering “about 380,000” will betray you at seven digits. Encode the exact string.
FAQ
What is the average number memory?
Most adults reliably hold about seven digits forward. Six to eight is the normal band. Nine or ten is clearly good. Twelve and up usually means a chunking system, not a magical buffer.
Is this an IQ test?
No. Digit span shows up on some psychometric batteries as one subtest. A single web run is not an IQ score, a diagnosis, or a claim about your intelligence.
Why does the number stay on screen longer at higher digits?
Because you have to read it. A 12-digit string flashed for one second is a vision test. Display time scales with length so the limiter is memory, which is the thing you came here to measure.
Can I use paper?
You can. Then you are testing handwriting speed. The percentile assumes you did not. Personal bests are stored on your device; they are only meaningful if you play the same way twice.
Why did I fail a number I remembered?
Common causes: dropped leading zeros, transposed two digits, or added a digit you “felt” should be there. Compare the Shown and You typed lines on the result screen — they are listed on purpose.
