What a spacebar test actually counts

A spacebar speed test is clicks per second for a different switch. Each physical key-down on Space is one press. We ignore auto-repeat, so holding the key does not print a fake 30 SPS. The clock starts on the first valid press, not on a countdown, and it stops on a duration you pick: 5, 10, 30, or 60 seconds. During the run you see live presses-per-second and a running total. After the run you get average SPS, peak SPS over a short window, and a percentile against other people who mashed a spacebar on a webpage.

Why does this page exist next to the click speed test? Because the audience is almost the same person on a different afternoon. Minecraft builders, cookie-clicker veterans, and anyone who bound jump to space want a number for the big key, not the mouse. The motor pattern is different: one large switch, usually the thumb, with a longer travel than a mouse micro-switch. People who post 11 CPS on the mouse often land closer to 7–8 SPS here. That is not a failure. It is a different tendon doing a different job.

How this compares to the click speed test

The engine is the same burst counter we use for CPS: first input starts the clock, live rate, peak over 200 ms, a hard stop. The difference is the input. Mouse clicks can jitter, butterfly, or drag. A spacebar cannot. If you want the honest “how fast is this hand” number, the spacebar is a cleaner instrument than a gaming mouse with a worn switch. If you want the number that shows up in PvP arguments, use the click speed test. Cross-link both. Run the 5-second mode on each and read the gap.

A respectable 5-second spacebar score on a laptop is 6–8 SPS. Ten-plus usually means you are bouncing the thumb with a short travel keyboard or mashing with two thumbs. Sixty seconds is where form falls apart — the thumb cramps, you clip the key, and the average drops a point. Take care of the joint. This is a website.

How to improve your score

  • Use the thumb, not a hammer-fist. A closed fist slamming the spacebar looks fast on camera and is slower on a counter. The thumb has a shorter path. Rest the palm and bounce the thumb from the first joint.
  • Shorten the travel. A tall mechanical spacebar with a 4 mm stroke is a cardio workout. A laptop scissor switch is faster. If you care about the number, use the keyboard you actually game on.
  • Do not hold the key. We ignore key-repeat on purpose. Holding Space is not a press. If another site gave you 40 SPS, they counted OS repeat. This one does not.
  • Pair it with the CPS pad. The same afternoon, run the 5-second click speed test and this 5-second spacebar test. The gap tells you whether the limiter is the hand or the switch.

FAQ

What is a good spacebar SPS?

Most people land between 5 and 8 presses per second on a 5-second test. Nine or ten is quick. Anything above 12 usually means two thumbs or a bounce technique. Compare spacebar scores only to other spacebar scores — they run cooler than mouse CPS.

Does holding the spacebar count?

No. We count key-down events and ignore auto-repeat. A hold is one press. If you want a click-rate for a mouse, use the click speed test instead.

Why is my SPS lower than my CPS?

A spacebar is a larger, longer-travel switch, usually hit with the thumb. A mouse micro-switch is a tiny, short-travel contact hit with a finger. Different hardware, different motor pattern. A 2-point gap is normal.

Can I take this on a phone?

There is a tap target for touch devices, but the search intent is a physical spacebar. Use a real keyboard if you want a number you can compare with friends.

Which duration should I use?

Five seconds is the default and the one people mean when they say “spacebar test.” Ten seconds starts to show control. Thirty and sixty measure whether the thumb survives. Use the same duration you used on the click speed test if you want a paired profile.
