Why an animals list is the default first theme
People search “animals word search” more than any other themed puzzle we can name, because the vocabulary is short, familiar, and visual. TIGER and EAGLE are five letters with distinctive shapes; you can hunt a T-I-G without sounding the word out. This page locks the generator to an animals list so the puzzle you get is actually animals — not a mixed bag with one lion hiding next to BASKETBALL.
The grid is generated in the browser on each new game. Words place across, down, and on both diagonals, forward and back. Twelve names is enough to fill a 12×12 without stacking them into mush. If a placement cannot fit, the generator retries; you will not get a list item that is absent from the grid. Time starts on the first drag. Strike-through on the list is the only progress bar that matters.
How this list is built
Every word is a common English animal name between four and five-plus letters. No breeds, no Latin, no “cat” (too short, too many false hits). WHALE and SHARK pull you toward the ocean pages if you want more of that water; SNAKE is also a game on this site, which is a coincidence we are not going to pretend is deep. KOALA and LLAMA exist because they have double vowels that are easy to spot once you are stuck on the last two.
A typical clear on this list is two to five minutes. If you are teaching someone the gesture, start here: the words are concrete and the false leads are few. After this, the sports page is denser and the science page is meaner. The mixed word search on the hub remains if you do not want a theme.
